OpenAI
In his current role as the Chief Economist at OpenAI, Ronnie is leading research into AI’s economic impacts and helping to ensure that its benefits are widely distributed.
Why does OpenAI have a Chief Economist?
Artificial intelligence is reshaping labor markets, productivity, and the competitive landscape faster than any previous general-purpose technology. OpenAI created the Chief Economist post to bring rigorous economic analysis to their decision-making processes. Ronnie’s mix of peer-reviewed scholarship, industry experience, and policy leadership equips him to translate complex market dynamics and signals into practical guardrails and growth paths that serve both innovation and the public good.
Why is it important to have an academic in this role?
A career in academia trained Ronnie to test claims rigorously, publish transparently, and think in decades rather than quarters. Inside OpenAI, Ronnie can explore ideas through data, challenge assumptions with the latest research, and translate a rapidly changing landscape into actionable insights for not only OpenAI's internal team but also key stakeholders, policymakers, and the broader public.
What does a Chief Economist actually do?
While at OpenAI, Ronnie is focused on forecasting the impact of AI, shaping responsible strategy, and communicating to the broader world about the changing economic landscape.
In forecasting the impact, Ronnie's team is modeling how new artificial intelligence capabilities will affect wages, skills demand, and sectoral growth.
In shape responsible strategy, Ronnie brings his background in policy and academia to critical questions about how to align OpenAI's decisions with broader societal gains, in line with its mission to ensure artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
In communicating about the changing economic landscape, Ronnie briefs leaders at multilateral forums, universities, and government agencies on how OpenAI’s research and products can tackle complex business and societal challenges—and, ultimately, drive inclusive prosperity.
